Why use it

A short guide to your site, written for AI

  • llms.txt is a simple text file that tells AI tools what your business is and which pages matter most: services, pricing, docs, contact.
  • It's easy to add and costs nothing, so it's a sensible extra once your site is readable by AI crawlers.
  • Writing it makes you list your key pages and describe them in one line each. That exercise improves your website copy too.
  • We're upfront: it's a proposed standard. Some AI tools and coding assistants use it, but Google doesn't. Fix robots.txt, JavaScript rendering and structured data first.

Where to use it

Most useful for

  • Software, SaaS and API products: point AI coding assistants to your docs and quick-start pages.
  • Course creators and publishers with many articles: highlight the best guides.
  • Service businesses: list services, pricing, areas served and how to book.
  • Any site after you've run the AI visibility checker and fixed the basics.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is llms.txt?

A Markdown file at the root of your website (yourdomain.com/llms.txt) with your site's name, a one-paragraph summary and lists of your most important links, each with a short description. It was proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024.

Does Google use llms.txt?

No. Google has said it doesn't use llms.txt. For Google and its AI Overviews, normal SEO, structured data and a sitemap are what count.

Does it control which AI bots can crawl my site?

No. llms.txt only suggests what to read. To allow or block AI crawlers, use robots.txt. Our AI visibility checker gives you a ready-made robots.txt section.

How many links should I include?

Keep it curated: usually 10 to 30 of your most useful pages, grouped under a few headings. It's a guide, not a full sitemap.

How do I add it to my site?

Download the file and upload it to your website's root folder so it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. On Replit, Vercel, Netlify or similar hosts, put it in the folder for public or static files. On WordPress, upload it with a file manager or an llms.txt plugin.

What does "Optional" mean in the file?

The llmstxt.org format treats a section titled "Optional" as extra links that AI tools can skip when they need a shorter context.
